“What’s your read on all that?” Jack Kendricks asked Lieutenant Rousseau when they stepped outside after that first mild interrogation of Commander Reyes.

“He’s feeding us just enough truth to make his lies credible,” Rousseau replied. “The basic facts about C.R.I. operations match what I saw during my time with them, but he’s definitely understating their capabilities and manpower.”

“I figured that was the case.”

“The documents we found include maps and other info that clearly indicated plans for an eastern offensive,” Rousseau said. “I’m betting they were getting close to beginning that operation before we took out the Natchez Bridge. I’m glad we got it done before that could happen.”

“What about this Eric Branson character—you think Reyes is being straight with us about him?”

“That’s the one topic that seems to genuinely get under his skin,” Rousseau noted. “The way his expression changes whenever Branson comes up... There’s real hatred there for sure. Whatever else he’s lying about, his obsession with catching that guy and his followers seems to be his driving force.”

Jack nodded. “I noticed that too. Makes me think this Branson must be doing something right to provoke that kind of reaction. The fact that one small militia group has tied up so many C.R.I. resources in those swamps is encouraging.”

“Assuming they’re still around after that air assault Reyes mentioned,” Rousseau cautioned. “Though I wouldn’t count them out yet. The Atchafalaya Basin is vast and wild and if their leader is as capable as Reyes makes him sound, I’m sure they’ll regroup.”

“Either way, I’ll double the guard on the guy. I want at least two men watching him at all times. We’ll give him time to think about his situation and come back and chat with him again in the morning. I want to get as much as he’ll tell us, even if half of it is lies. And I want to know more about his efforts to hunt down this Eric Branson and his militia. It sounds to me like that guy knows a thing or two about organizing a civilian resistance. It’s good to know we’re not alone.”

Jack spent a restless night pondering everything they’d learned from Commander Reyes. Despite his exhaustion after the long day, sleep eluded him as he kept turning over the implications of what the C.R.I. officer had revealed—and what he was likely still hiding. The next morning at dawn, he met with Lieutenant Rousseau to plan their strategy for the morning’s interrogation. They spread the documents from Reyes’ leather folder across a wooden table, studying the maps and communications memos in detail.

“Look at these highway checkpoints,” Rousseau pointed to penciled notations. “They’ve got them spread across two-thirds of the state of Louisiana, not to mention east Texas. They’ve got bigger numbers than he claimed, and no telling what kind of equipment. It didn’t take them long to get word of what happened to the bridge and send that UH-72 out here on a recon flight. I wouldn’t be surprised if they send helicopter gunships next.
